Births by community
Births per year for each sub-community of the Stamford Hill area, 5767–5787. A birth is placed in a community by the shul printed with its girl's kiddush or boy's shalom zachar / bris notice, using a shul-by-shul categorisation made by a community member (the project author). Counts under 5 are left blank.
Births by community
Share of births, by community
Each year's births with a known community = 100%. Births whose shul is not classified (and, in “observed only”, births with no shul printed) are left out of the share.
Table
Births per Hebrew year for the view chosen above. Blank = fewer than 5. 5787 is the current year (first issues only); 5767 starts in Kislev (the earliest issues are missing).
How much is observed?
Share of each year's births whose notice prints a shul that is categorised. Most boys' shalom zachars are held at home (in-laws, parents, own home), so far fewer boys than girls carry a shul; 5780 dips because of the Covid closures.
Method: how the communities were made
- Shul list. Every shul printed with a birth, bar mitzva or oifruf notice was listed once per address (different spellings and names printed at the same address merged into one row), plus the frequent shul names printed without any address.
- Categorised by a community member. The project author, who knows the community, went through the list shul by shul and put each into a community: Satmar 86, Satmar 26, Belz 99, Belz (Belz), Bobov, Bobov-45, Vizhnitz (89 / Merkaz / Monsey), Gur, Skver, Chabad, a named small chasidus, non-affiliated (with the shul's own name), or yeshiva. His free-text answers were normalised (e.g. “satmar 86”, “belz belz”, “bobov45”, “viznitz monsey”, “69 - unafilliated”) into these labels without changing what he chose.
- Shared addresses. Some buildings are used by several communities (e.g. the halls on Lampard Grove, a simcha hall, a building where one community rents the upper floor). For these the author asked to “go by what it states at the time”: the shul name printed on that notice decides (e.g. “באבוב” → Bobov, “באבוב45” → Bobov-45, “בעלזא” → Belz). At the Satmar 26 building the Sefardi minyan upstairs is counted under Yeshiva / other when the notice names it. A hall with no community printed is treated like “no shul printed”.
- Rows left blank. Where the author left a row blank, an automatic rule is used and marked “auto” in the table below: a chasidus named in the shul's name (e.g. “סאטמאר”, “בעלזא”, “וויזניץ”) goes to that chasidus but, with no number or known address, to its “unspecified” line — never merged into Satmar 26/86 or Belz 99; other named chasidic shtiebels go to Small chasidus; kehilla and litvish shuls to Non-affiliated. Shuls no rule recognises stay “Unknown (shul not classified)”.
- Which notice decides. For a girl: the kiddush. For a boy: the shalom zachar, then the bris, then a kiddush — the first that names a categorised shul. A home (בבית…) is not a shul.
- No shul printed → inferred (only in “observed + inferred”). Most boys' shalom zachars are at home, so a boy's community is often not printed. Assuming boys' and girls' families are alike, two steps fill this in: (a) the same family — where the same father (matched on his name and his father-in-law's name, privately, inside the data) has a daughter's kiddush (or another child's notice) in a categorised shul, that community is used, taking the nearest birth in time; (b) otherwise the birth is shared out by the same Hebrew year's girls' kiddush distribution (fractions; inferred from girls' kiddush, same years). The same applies to the few girls with no shul printed. The “observed only” view uses none of this.
- Privacy. Only yearly totals are shown, under 5 left blank. Shul names are institutions and are shown; house numbers are left out of this public table.
Every shul and its community
Rows A… = one shul address (names printed there merged; house numbers omitted here); rows N… = shul names printed without an address. “Author's value” is what he wrote; “Community” is the normalised label used. “Births” = births in the data placed through that row (blank under 5). Search:
